Hello! I'm Crystal.

Whether I'm doing journalism or motion design...or both at the same time, my goal is to find the best ways to tell stories.

I am an independent motion designer and art director who thrives on tackling challenging creative briefs. From condensing complex scientific research into a one-minute explainer to visualizing the experience of depression for a long-term incarcerated Black male in America, animation allows me to learn, obsess, and then bring to life stories that educate, create resonance, and spark imagination.

I started my career as a video journalist at The Wall Street Journal in Asia. The talented reporters, editors and fellow vjs I got to work with helped refine my techniques and storytelling, that eventually led to a freelance career to tell stories for brands, non-profits and various news organizations with motion.

My first animated feature short film 'Monkey on My Back' won the Gold Award of The Best Animation (Start-ups) Award in the 10th Animation Support Program.

When I am not setting keyframes, I am cycling along the harbor, doing plein-air paintings, shopping for spices or praising dogs. I also love sharing what I learn every day by speaking at events or holding workshops at local universities in Hong Kong.

If you'd like to collaborate on a project, ask about my work experience or just say hi, please drop me a line!

Crystal out there
